How to Track AI Agent Visits and AI-Referred Sales on Shopify (2026)
Last updated 1 November 2026
AI agents now research products and buy for shoppers. Your reports split that traffic across several places, and each one counts a different slice, so no single number is the whole picture. This guide shows where each source is, what it sees, what it misses, and a simple setup that covers most of it.
Three kinds of AI traffic (and why your numbers disagree)
"AI traffic" means three different things, and every tool counts a different mix of them:
- AI-referred shoppers. A person asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, clicks a link in the answer, and lands on your store.
- Orders placed inside the agent. The shopper buys without visiting your storefront, in an AI channel such as Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, or Meta.
- Agents visiting your store themselves. Crawlers, agentic browsers and shopping agents read your pages, compare products and sometimes start a cart, often before any person clicks.

Which source sees which kind:
- Shopify's Agentic report: orders inside its AI channels, and sessions they send. Not agent visits.
- Shopify's "AI answer engines" referrer: AI-referred shoppers whose referrer survived. Not in-agent orders or agent visits.
- GA4's AI Assistant channel: AI-referred shoppers with a recognised referrer. In-agent orders not reliably, agent visits not at all.
- Storefront agent tracking (apps or logs): agent visits, plus referrals and orders depending on the tool.
Shopify's Agentic report
Short answer: In Shopify admin, Sales channels › Agentic shows sales, orders and sessions for the AI channels Shopify connects to: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot, Meta and Shop. It's the best place to see orders placed inside those agents, but it doesn't include assistants that aren't Shopify channels.
Shopify turns on Agentic storefronts by default for eligible stores, and says orders from AI channels "display in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution" (Shopify Help Center). According to Anatta (25 October 2026), viewing the report needs the store owner, or staff with the Products › View and Apps and sales channels › Agentic permissions.
What it misses: Perplexity and Claude aren't Shopify channels, so they don't appear. It also doesn't show agents browsing your storefront.
Shopify Analytics: the "AI answer engines" referrer channel
Short answer: No, the Agentic report doesn't include Perplexity and Claude. To see them, filter Shopify Analytics reports by Referrer channel = AI answer engines, which groups visits referred by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and other AI platforms. It relies on the referrer, so it counts different shoppers from the Agentic report.
Anatta notes that Gemini needs a separate filter: Referrer host = gemini.google.com. Visits whose referrer was removed land in Direct instead.
GA4's AI Assistant channel
Short answer: Partly. Since 14 May 2026, GA4 puts visits with a recognised AI referrer, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, in an "AI Assistant" channel (Search Engine Journal). Visits without a referrer land in Direct, links with a utm_source but no medium land in Unassigned, and clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Organic Search.
The details, from trackingdesk (28 October 2026):
- Tags beat the referrer. A tagged link takes its source from the tag, so a ChatGPT click carrying
utm_source=chatgpt.comand no medium leaves the AI Assistant channel for Unassigned. - No referrer means Direct. A link copied out of a chat, or opened by an app that passes no referrer, looks like someone typing your address.
- Google's AI answers are search. AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are part of Organic Search, not AI Assistant.

Google hasn't published the full list of assistants the channel recognises, so also filter Traffic acquisition by source for perplexity.ai and claude.ai.
ChatGPT specifically
Short answer: ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout, and it's tracked mostly through
utm_source=chatgpt.com, which only appears on some answers. Anatta reports that from about 8 October 2026
inline links opened with no referrer and no tag, until a fix began rolling out on 15 October. Many clicks from the mobile
app carry no referrer, so they look like Direct.
Shopify describes ChatGPT as a discovery channel: the purchase completes on your checkout. Expect it in the Agentic report, in GA4 as AI Assistant, Unassigned or Direct depending on how the click arrived, and in Shopify's referrer reports when a referrer survives.
Seeing the agents themselves, not just the referrals
Short answer: Shopify's reports count channels and referrals, not agents browsing your storefront. To see the agents themselves (crawlers, agentic browsers and shopping agents), you need storefront-level tracking that sorts visits into people and agents and shows which pages each agent read. Apps such as Crawlight, Kedra and Scelto do this, and so can your server logs.
It matters because an agent can read your product pages, compare you with other stores and move on before any person visits. Without storefront data you never see that lost demand.
The options:
- Server or CDN logs show every request, including agents that run no scripts, but Shopify doesn't give merchants raw storefront logs, and reading them takes technical work.
- Shopify apps classify visits for you. Each one counts a different set of agents in a different way, so check how a tool identifies agents before trusting its numbers.
What a "verified" agent is
Anyone can put "ChatGPT" in a request's user-agent string, so a name alone proves nothing. A verified agent is one whose request carries a valid cryptographic signature under Web Bot Auth, an emerging standard that lets agent makers sign their requests with published keys. Scelto checks the signature against the maker's published keys; agents that only state a name are shown as named, not verified.
How Scelto shows the agent journey
Scelto is a Shopify app that shows which AI agents visit, which are verified, what they look at and how far they get toward checkout, plus the orders AI sends. It counts an order as AI when Shopify records an AI assistant's sales channel as its source, or when the visit Shopify attributes to it came from an AI assistant's link. Setup is one install and one switch in the theme editor, and agents get the same prices and facts as people, with no hidden instructions.
Two limits, stated plainly:
- Storefront visits are recorded only with analytics consent through Shopify's cookie banner (see the privacy policy). Requests agents make to Scelto's agent view and store agent are logged without it.
- The storefront tracking runs in the browser, so agents that read pages without running scripts show up only through what they send: shoppers, orders, and requests to the agent view or store agent.

A simple setup you can do today
Short answer: Use three layers. Check Shopify's Agentic report for channel sales. Check GA4's AI Assistant channel, plus a source filter for perplexity.ai and claude.ai, for AI-referred visitors. Add storefront tracking to see agent visits and how far agents get. Then ask new customers how they found you, to catch AI visits that look like Direct.
- Open Sales channels › Agentic and pick a 28-day range.
- In Shopify Analytics, filter reports by Referrer channel = AI answer engines, and add Referrer host = gemini.google.com.
- In GA4, open Traffic acquisition by default channel group, then filter source for perplexity.ai and claude.ai.
- Decide on tags: tag your own AI-placed links completely (source and medium) or not at all, so GA4 doesn't file them under Unassigned.
- Run the free agent check to see how agents read your store, then add storefront agent tracking to see agent visits and where they drop off.
- Add a post-purchase "How did you hear about us?" question with an option such as "AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini…)".
- Review monthly. Expect the sources to disagree, and watch the trend rather than any one number.

Questions
Is AI traffic counted as Direct in Shopify?
Often, yes, when the AI app doesn't pass a referrer, as many in-app browsers don't. Shopify's Agentic report still credits orders from its own AI channels, because those come through Shopify rather than through a referrer.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from sending traffic?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT reading a page for a shopper uses ChatGPT-User. Blocking those, not GPTBot, affects whether ChatGPT can show your store.
Can I see which products AI agents look at?
Not in Shopify's built-in reports, which count channels and referrals. You need storefront-level agent tracking from an app or your server logs.
Why is Gemini missing from my AI answer engines report?
Per Anatta's guide, citing Shopify, filter by Referrer Host for gemini.google.com to see Gemini referrals.
Do I need an app to sell in ChatGPT on Shopify?
No. Shopify turns on Agentic storefronts by default for eligible stores. Apps add measurement and readiness on top.
Is tracking AI agents GDPR-compliant?
It depends on the tool. Scelto records storefront visits only with analytics consent through Shopify's cookie banner; see its privacy policy.
